Gregory Dunn Tomlin, "Grumpy" to those who loved him best, age 79, a longtime resident of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3rd, 2026, at Benchmark Assisted Living.
Gregory was born on April 5th, 1947, in Alexandria, VA, to the late Robert Tomlin and Jessica Callahan Tomlin. He graduated from the University of Connecticut and went on to serve his country in the United States Army from September 1969 to April 1971, including a tour in Vietnam from April 1970 to April 1971.
When he came home, Gregory joined the Stamford Police Department, fulfilling a childhood dream of becoming a police officer. He proudly served for 47 years, where he rose to Captain and capped his career as Interim Chief, earning the respect of everyone who worked alongside him.
At home, he earned the nickname "Grumpy," and anyone who knew him would tell you it fit him perfectly. He is remembered for his devotion to his family, his quiet strength, and the decades he spent watching over the people he loved most.
Gregory is survived by his wife, Beryl; his sons, David, and Michael; his daughters-in-law, Claudette and Michelle; his sister, Joan McCabe; and his grandchildren, Declan, Marshall, and Ainsley, who will carry his memory forward.
Family and friends are invited to gather in his memory on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Lacerenza Macari Family Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford, CT. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter (www.alz.org) and/or ARI of Connecticut Inc. (www.arict.org).
The family is deeply grateful to Right at Home, Constellation Health Services and Benchmark Assisted Living for the care and compassion shown to Gregory in his final months.
